“I finally found a career I enjoy”
Jessica’s journey from apprentice to aspiring Dispensing Optician

From uncertainty to opportunity
When Jessica Firrell finished sixth form, she wasn’t sure what came next. With no clear subject interests and only just passing business and media, university didn’t feel like the right fit. Instead, she turned to apprenticeships, hoping to find something more hands-on and fulfilling.
She applied for several business and marketing apprenticeships, but the interviews confirmed what she already suspected – that an office-based role wasn’t for her. Then she came across the Specsavers Optical Assistant Apprenticeship, and everything changed.
After meeting the store manager in Ely and learning more about the role, Jessica felt a spark of excitement. The interview was personal and engaging, and the potential career paths sounded promising.
“We talked about how the store runs, what a typical day looks like, and even my personal interests. It felt like they really wanted to get to know me, not just tick boxes.”
Following a successful trial shift, Jessica accepted the offer and began her Level 3 Optical Assistant Apprenticeship. She quickly found her rhythm, supported by a team of friendly colleagues and dedicated apprenticeship coaches.
An army of support
“The balance between studying and working was perfect. Everything I learned off the job was relevant to what I was doing on the shop floor. And the regular check-ins from my coaches kept me motivated-they were always there if I had any concerns.”
With determination and support, Jessica completed her apprenticeship in just 16 months. The final assessment was nerve-wracking, especially as she was the first person in her store to take on the Level 3 programme. But after a pep talk from her director, she went in confident-and came out with a distinction.
Learning and growing
But Jessica wasn’t ready to stop there. Inspired by her experience and eager to deepen her knowledge, she began exploring her next steps. Conversations with colleagues and her apprenticeship coach led her to the Dispensing Optician (DO) Apprenticeship through ABDO College-a route that would allow her to continue learning while working.
“I love that as a DO; I can create a positive experience for customers that not only brightens their day but adds real value to their lives.”
Between finishing her first apprenticeship and starting the DO course, Jessica kept busy. She ran in-store training sessions, completed the audiology clinical support course, and helped newer apprentices prepare for their exams.
Now, as a Student Dispensing Optician, she’s thriving. The course offers a mix of on-the-job learning and weekly study days, which fits well with her lifestyle and commute. She’s already seeing the impact of her training in practice, with regular customers returning to her for advice and problem-solving.
The power of apprenticeships
Jessica’s experience perfectly showcases the power of apprenticeships- not just as a way into a career, but as a launchpad for growth, confidence, and long-term ambition.
“I’d recommend the Specsavers apprenticeship to anyone. There are so many options to progress, and I’ve met incredible people along the way.”
Looking ahead, Jessica is excited to qualify as a Dispensing Optician and hopes to take on more senior roles in the future.
