Glaucoma remains a leading cause of preventable sight loss, with approximately 50% of cases undiagnosed, says Paul Morris, director of professional advancement at Specsavers.

'As community optometrists, we have a unique role in raising awareness and promoting eye care. With Glaucoma Awareness Week 2025 beginning on 30 June, here are some ways we can make a difference.'

Engage and educate

'The first step in combating glaucoma is education.

'Community optometrists can use patient interactions as an opportunity to educate about the importance of regular eye tests, especially for those in high-risk groups such as older people and those with a family history of glaucoma.

'Encourage patients to ask friends, family and colleagues when they last had an eye test.

'Consider using informative materials aids in your practice to help explain the condition and its risks.'

Support Glaucoma UK’s initiatives

'Glaucoma Awareness Week 2025 is organised by Glaucoma UK to highlight the need for greater awareness and highlight support available for those living with glaucoma. The charity is launching several initiatives.

'Glaucoma UK also provides optometrists with the information and tools they need to help patients, and their friends and family. The week will also see activity through national news titles, radio and social media.

'Eye care teams can share these materials and reinforce messages in their practices. For more information and to get involved, visit https://glaucoma.uk/glaucoma-awareness-week/.'
